Why convert
HEIC — the iPhone photo format that Windows and many sites refuse. So an iPhone photo opens on Windows and uploads to sites that don't understand HEIC. AVIF — a newer image format, smaller still than WebP, but not supported everywhere.
What changes in the file
The image is compressed once more; at quality 80 and above there is no visible difference. EXIF data and location are removed by default.
Which settings to pick
Quality 80–85 is the sweet spot: above it the file grows with no visible gain. For websites and email, scale to 1920 on the longest side.
