Why convert
MPEG — the DVD and old camcorder format that DVD players understand. When you only need the sound from MPEG: music, a lecture or a podcast to listen to without a screen. AAC — an audio codec that sounds cleaner than MP3 at the same bitrate.
What changes in the file
The picture is dropped and the first audio track is kept. The sound is encoded once more, so keep the bitrate at least as high as the original.
Which settings to pick
Use 192–256 kbit/s for music; 96 is enough for speech.
