Why convert
MPEG — the DVD and old camcorder format that DVD players understand. When you only need the sound from MPEG: music, a lecture or a podcast to listen to without a screen. WAV — uncompressed sound from recorders and studio software; the files are large.
What changes in the file
The picture is dropped and the first audio track is kept. Quality will not improve: what MPEG compression threw away is gone; the file just gets bigger.
