Why convert
WMV — the Windows Media format; only Windows plays it without fuss. When you only need the sound from WMV: music, a lecture or a podcast to listen to without a screen. AIFF — Apple's uncompressed audio, the Mac counterpart of WAV.
What changes in the file
The picture is dropped and the first audio track is kept. Quality will not improve: what WMV compression threw away is gone; the file just gets bigger.
Which settings to pick
A lossless format with little to tune: you can trim the recording and change the volume.
