Why convert
A short clip for a chat, a how-to or a GitHub README that plays by itself without sound.
What changes in the file
Sound is dropped and only 256 colours remain. A GIF is heavier than a video of the same length, so it suits clips of a few seconds.
Which settings to pick
Trim the clip first: 3 to 5 seconds is usually enough. Width 480 at 15 frames per second gives smooth motion at a sensible size.
